this was the type of performance that romney brought last night. bill crystal in "the weekly standard" said, romney comes out of the debate with momentum. can his campaign turn a good debate into a true inflection point in the presidential race? so in your estimation, your guy went up against mitt romney in the primary and debates, how does this mitt romney last night compare to the one that your guy debated against and then how does romney seize on this moment to keep up that momentum in the final days? >> well, first of all, i'm not the least bit surprised mitt romney did as well as he did. he did well in the 20 debates rick santorum went up against him. i would also argue one of the big advantages romney had going into the debate was he did have to debate rick santorum, he did have to debate newt gingrich. it is like having a preseason. and the president didn't have that. i think the other key thing that came out of this is the presidential race for all practical purposes actually started last night. a lot of people just didn't know mitt romney

want to do if he becomes president because the person who showed up wednesday night, mitt romney, is not exactly the person who has been on that campaign trail for the last year. >> well, mitt romney, to be fair, does love big bird. he just doesn't want the government to pay for big bird's nest. >> sure. >> so when we talk, chris, about what we're seeing from the president, is the wind at his back moving forward and, again, we are anticipating mitt romney's speech later in the hour in virginia. >> well, i mean, the jobs report clearly has helped, but i have been saying this for a while. this is a very volatile race, and, you know, clearly i think the debate helped the romney campaign. they were in -- they were on their deathbed, and it's resurrected him to some extent, but, you know, there is still enormous amount of time left but the stakes i would say for the next debate are really high for both candidates. because for romney to have any chance of kind of building his momentum, he has to do well. if the president can have a strong performance and he can have, as you just saw in tha

but it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year, promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. >> you know, karen, this is the day after the debate when he was criticized for not slugging back at mitt romney. are we going to hear more attacks on these about mitt romney's evolving positions? >> probably, we will. here's the problem that romney has from the beginning. his honest and trustworthiness, which is characteristic in polling, where president obama has consistently done very well. people trust him. also shares my values. with romney, people aren't quite sure. so he's also got fundamental problems, even within his own base. this idea that he's trying to now shift positions in the last few weeks to appease and to appeal to independents comes at too risk to not being able to garner the support he needs on the far right. so, sure. the other point is, either he's lying or we just don't know what he's going to do, because the presi

and last night, we found out he doesn't have a $5 trillion tax cut, and i guess he outsourced that to china or something. >> you know, the vice presidential candidate traditionally plays the role of the attack dog. do you think that's what joe biden was doing right there? >> yeah. and joe biden sort of louse an entree into the obama campaign into a group they're most concerned about, which is blue-collar workers, reagan democrats, people in the industrial midwest. so i think biden sort of does a good job at outreaching to those types of people. it should be said, in the past couple of days, though, obama himself has not been too hesitant in criticizing mitt romney aside from those 90 minutes when they were on the debate stage together. but i think obama is also kind of playing the role of the attack dog over the past few days, at least. >> erin, congressman ryan has a full schedule of campaign events in the days proceeding the event. vice president biden, as you have been saying, has been hunkering down to prepare. what does that say about the confidence level in the final days before

mitt romney brought it up during the debate. and then again last night. here is what he said. let's listen to that. >> i got a chance to ask him why it was with the deficit so severe and such a threat to our future that the president would $90 billion on so-called green energy jobs. anybody here have one of those? i keep looking. >> the president -- >> i guess -- >> the president didn't have an answer for that. the president didn't have an answer for romney on that on wednesday. he hasn't talked about green jobs since. is that a mistake? >> i think it was a a mistake during the debate not to defend his agenda on the issue more carefully and more strongly. romney had this line in the debate you don't just pick the winners, you pick the losers too. and the president kind of brushed it aside and didn't address it. i would like to have heard the president debate that issue more carefully. that said, the president is not running on green jobs being the center of his economic agenda. you heard a lot of that on wednesday night about what he is for in terms of reducing the deficit, in

and as we've seen, mitt romney is paying a high price for one good night. he made up 27 myths in 38 minutes, now he's got a lot of explaining to do. whether it's on medicare, why he's charging current seniors $11,000 more out of pocket. why people of my generation would pay over $200,000 for medicare under his plan? or whether you see even newt gingrich meeting a higher honesty and integrity standard than mitt romney. so i think it's really creating more problems over time. for mitt romney. but -- >> 200,000 -- tom, let me stop you there. 200,000 figure, that's the first time i've heard that where did you get that number? >> the center for american progress, which looked at under the romney/ryan plan, under their voucher plan, one of the few things that romney did not abandon in the debate. that means that people in my generation have to come up with $200,000 before we retire to cover the health care that we're currently guaranteed because of what we pay in every week with payroll tax. for a baby boomer that's about $60,000 before they retire. for millenniu
